The Northern Strands Wirelock Socketing Calculator has been designed to assist you in determining the correct volume of Wirelock® socketing compound required for your application. It is your responsibility to assure that correct procedures are followed for the termination of a wire rope using resin poured sockets.
Considerations that must be made include but are not limited to:
- Temperatures of the wire rope, socket, resin and ambient are within the acceptable range as per the Wirelock® manual.
- Resin should be mixed for 2 minutes, or until a completely homogenous mixture is attained.
- When combining multiple kits, all of the ingredients from the different kits should be mixed together in a metal can.
- Wirelock® has an 18 month shelf life, check the expiration date prior to mixing; never use expired resin.
- Wires must be completely unlaid from one another completely down to the seizing including (if applicable) the Independent Wire Rope Core (IWRC).
- Any non-metal components in the broom must be cut out.
- Resin should change colour; from a straw yellow colour to a turquoise blue when mixed. If this colour change does not occur- do not use the resin.
- When the resin mixture cures it will change back to a yellow colour; if this colour change does not occur- do not use the socket.
- Cure times vary based on ambient temperature and the temperature of the components. Do not add heat to the socket prior to or during the pour as this will affect the proper formation of a uniform resin cone within the socket.
- Full resin penetration of the socket must be achieved and there must be no voids or gaps in the cured cone.
- The broomed wires must be cleaned in a solvent to remove all grease and contamination, never pour resin onto a broom that does not pass the white glove test.
