Training Overview

Ensure safe and effective material handling with Northern Strands’ Below the Hook Rigging course. Designed for workers involved in lifting and rigging operations, this comprehensive program provides the essential knowledge and hands-on skills required to safely inspect, select, and use rigging equipment below the hook. Participants will learn to assess load weights, choose appropriate rigging hardware, calculate load angles, and apply safe lifting techniques in accordance with industry regulations and best practices.

Also known by other names such as ‘Fall Protection’ and ‘Working at Heights’, Northern Strands’ Fall Arrest course equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to recognize fall hazards and use fall protection equipment safely and effectively. This course covers the key components of fall arrest systems, inspection procedures, anchor point selection, harness fitting, as well as the proper use of lanyards and connectors.

Northern Strands also offers a Working at Heights training course that is approved by Safe Work Manitoba.

The Air Winch / Tugger training course offered by Northern Strands provides essential instruction for the safe operation, inspection, and maintenance of air-powered winches commonly used in mining, construction, and other industrial environments. This course is designed to give participants a solid understanding of air winch mechanics, safe rigging practices, load control, and recertification requirements, with a strong emphasis on hazard awareness and compliance with applicable safety regulations.

This training seminar offers specialized training in the proper use and application of Wirelock®, the industry-leading socketing compound for terminating wire rope. This hands-on course covers every step of the socketing process, including rope preparation, socket evaluation, compound mixing and pouring procedures, and curing times—ensuring safe, reliable terminations that make the most of the wire rope breaking strength. Upon completion of the course, all samples will be pull tested to destruction to ensure trainees have successfully completed the course objectives.

Northern Strands’ Suspended Access training course prepares workers to safely operate and work from suspended access equipment in accordance with industry and regulatory standards. This unique and specialized course covers hazard identification, equipment inspection, safe work procedures, emergency protocols, and the proper use of fall protection systems while using suspended access equipment (swing stages). 

Fall Arrest Training is required prior to enrolment.

Northern Strands’ Overhead Travelling Crane training program is designed to provide participants with the essential knowledge and skills to safely operate overhead cranes with capacities of less than 50 tonnes in accordance with Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. This course covers key topics including crane components, load handling, load estimation, rigging components (such as slings, shackles, and hooks), and signalling procedures. Participants will also learn the proper inspection and maintenance of both crane and rigging equipment to ensure safe and reliable operations.

This course provides attendees with the foundational knowledge needed to identify unsafe conditions when using Crosby rigging hardware with wire rope, chain, and synthetic slings. Topics include proper inspection, selection, and use of Crosby-specific rigging components to help prevent accidents and equipment failures. The training is based on U.S. standards and OHSA regulations.
