Make-A-Wish Canada and Northern Strands Work Together to Grant Wishes Each Year

There are many worthwhile charities for companies to partner with. Yet there are very few that offer a local and personnel connection like Make-A-Wish Canada. The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a charity in Canada whose grants wishes to critically ill children each year. The amazing work they do changes the lives of these children and their families for the better! This dedication to children and community aligns directly with the core values the Northern Strands Group of Companies holds. We have committed to grant the wish of one child each year for the past several years and everyone chips in to make this a reality. Our teams take this commitment to heart, and we work throughout the year make this donation possible each year.

With fundraising events not possible this year, our team became creative in their fundraising efforts. Our staff rose to the challenge this year and we collected recycling from all locations to send to SARCAN as well as having a silent auction with donation items from companies we work with.

This last year we sponsored a 7 year old girl named Alexis. She loves swimming, Lego and animals. Her wish was to have a puppy! Through our donations and fundraising this year we have been able to grant this wish for Alexis. She welcomed home a Cocker Spaniel puppy this year.

The creativity of these kids and amazing strength and spirit makes working with Make-A-Wish so much fun! There are quite a few children in Canada waiting for a wish so check out their page at: https://makeawish.ca for ways you can get involved or donate! It’s an amazing organization doing work to make the world a softer and gentler place for critically ill children in Canada.

Northern Strands Wins Agriculture Equipment Innovation Award at Agri-Trade 2018

Northern Strand was honored to accept the Agriculture Equipment Innovation Award at Agri-Trade 2018 for our cutting edge Bin Safe System. The Agriculture Innovation Award is given to a company that celebrates new ideas, helps farmers meet new requirements, or provides a product to help meet new and changing needs in the agricultural sector. The judges for the Innovation Award are farmers; those who actually use agricultural products on their farm or ranch. The $1,500 price given to Northern Strands was donated to the Northern Strands Group of Companies' charity of choice, the Children's Wish Foundation of Saskatchewan.

The Bin Safe System is a farm safety equipment product that was developed to allow farmers to climb and easily access a grain bin for repairs or inspections. The system is an extremely cost effective alternative to grain bin walk ways, grain bin cages, and grain elevators. The implementation of new regulations in Alberta Farm Safety requires fall protection on various farms. Thus, the Bin Safe System helps farmers meet new legislative requirements and also provides the agricultural industry with a product to help meet new and changing needs on farms.

Up next for Northern Strands is the 2019 Crop Production Show hosted in Saskatoon Saskatchewan January 15 - 17, 2019 in booths C55-56. We will also be attending the Manitoba Ag Days Trade Show in the Inventor Area in Barn 4 Booth 1819 from January 22, 23, and 24th in Brandon Manitoba!

The Northern Strands Group of Companies Honored with 2017 NSBA Community Builder Award

March 30th was an exciting night for employees of the Northern Strands Group of Companies.  It was the NSBA Business Builder Awards and the Group of Companies was a finalist for Community Builder and Safe Employer Awards.  The Children's Wish Foundation of Saskatchewan had nominated the Group of companies for the Community Builder Award and the NSBA nominated us for the Safe Employer Award.

Why were we honored with the Community Builder Award you might ask?  On an annual basis the Northern Strands Group of Companies gives back to the community in a variety of ways. An employee-driven Committee has been established to drive fund-raising while keeping in mind the other areas of social responsibility.

Right from day one our employees are exposed to our culture of community support and social responsibility. In our new hire pack we have included a letter that explains our efforts to be an active contributor in the community. This same letter explains that we have partnered with the Saskatchewan Children's Wish foundation and have the goal of granting one child's wish annually. After reading this letter, many of our employees choose to donate through our Children's Wish payroll deduction program. This is just the start of our fundraising though.

Throughout the year we raise funds for Children's Wish in a variety of ways; Paper, pop cans, containers and batteries are recycled. Additional funds are raised through yard cleanup with scrap steel and other reusable goods being sent to auction. The Group of Companies holds several fund-raising BBQ's throughout the summer. Employees are encouraged to participate and volunteer to help with the activities during the event. We contact neighboring businesses and drop off flyers in the effort to grow each and every BBQ.

We also have a very unique way of giving back to the community. We use our Safety Training Ambulance to raise money at events like Craven Country Jamboree and other similar events. Our Trainers donate their time as first responders. They offer basic medical care out of the ambulance. Any money we are paid is donated back to Children's Wish.

Every year our efforts have helped give hope to a local family that needed it the most. We believe one of the key reasons we are successful in encouraging our employees to donate their time is the connection we make with the child we are aligned with. Every year we make an effort to meet with our Children's Wish child and their family at a Children's Wish organized event. The last two years we participated in Children's Wish's Exile Island.  A fundraising event where 8 employees take the afternoon off to compete in a series of fun events with their child.

We are proud to say that for last 4 years in a row we have donated over $10,000 towards granting a Child's Wish!

Although Children's Wish is our main focus, we still contribute to the community in a variety of other ways. We have sponsored or donated to many other local charities, events and teams; the Contacts, Delisle Rodeo, Saskatchewan 4H club, The Salvation Army, Saskatoon Food bank, Friendship Inn and SWITCH.

We are equally proud of our NSBA Safe Employer Finalist Nomination. Safety of our employees, customers and community has and always will be the cornerstone of the Northern Strands Group of Companies. Many companies promote safety, but our company is literally built on safety. We have several divisions with a direct link to offering safe solutions to our community including safety training, fall protection systems, rigging and lifting, and suspended access. We also perform safety inspections and regularly develop safe work procedures and systems for the mining and industrial industries. We are continuously reviewing and enhancing our own safety and environmental polices. We will continue to demonstrate that our commitment to safety and environment in our community will always be our highest priority.

The Northern Strands Group of Companies will continue to lead by example by supporting our local communities and being an industry leader in employee and worker safety.  We would like to thank the hardworking employees of the Northern Strands Group of Companies.  Our employees are the driving force behind our fundraising efforts and our safety first mentality.

Northern Strands Group of Companies Employees Fundraise for Children's Wish Exile Island Event

For the second year in a row, the Northern Strands Group of Companies(Northern Strands, Fortis Mining Engineering & Manufacturing, Certified Mining & Construction Sales & Rentals), was invited to participate in Children's Wish Exile Island.  On March 10, 2017, The Children’s Wish Foundation challenged 15 local business and community groups to gather a Cast of 10 and take part in an action packed day of fun and friendly competition all in a united effort to grant 15 heartfelt wishes. Modeled after the popular television show “Survivor”, all the “Cast”-aways were sent to Legends Centre, Warman, SK to compete in a series of mental, physical, creative and strategic challenges. Each team was paired with a local Wish Child who cheered us on and inspired these brave competitors.

Here is a link to a story the Clarke's Crossing Gazette did on Exile Island this year http://www.ccgazette.ca/wp/?p=9125

The child we are aligned with this year for Exile Island was Aurora.   Her favorite movie is Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2.  Luckily, this year's Exile Island theme was movies!  Her favorite movie is about food coming alive...Thus Team Meatballs was born!  Our team theme and costumes were based on the Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 movie. We won two team awards at Exile Island. Set Design/team area and the one we are most proud of Top Box Office/most money raised!  See the pictures below of our time at Exile Island...

We are proud to say that for last 4 years in a row we have donated over $10,000 towards granting a Child's Wish!

Throughout the year we raise funds for Children's Wish in a variety of ways; Paper, pop cans, containers and batteries are recycled. Additional funds are raised through yard cleanup with scrap steel and other reusable goods being sent to auction. We have a raffle at our Christmas party and we have a separate intercompany raffle for 5 pairs of Rush tickets.

Our Trainers donate their time as first responders at these types of events. They offer basic medical care out of the ambulance. Any money we are paid is donated back to Children's Wish. Even if the event cannot afford to pay, our Trainers will still volunteer simply to help those in need.

Every year our efforts have helped give hope to a local family that needed it the most. We believe one of the key reasons we are so successful in encouraging our employees to donate their time is the connection we make with the child we are aligned with. By doing events like Exile Island you can see the difference you are making in the child and their family's life.

We would like to thank Novatex Industrial printers for making our great banner and The Cherry On Top - Sweet Treats by Erin for making our creative cupcakes.  See pictures below.

Northern Strands Group of Companies supports Children's Wish Foundation at Getzlaf Golf Tournament

The Northern Strands Group of Companies was proud to show it's support of the Children's Wish Foundation Saskatchewan at the 2nd Annual Chris Getzlaf Charity Golf Tournament.   In 2014 The Northern Strands Group of Companies employees raised $10,000 for Children's Wish Saskatchewan and helped grant the first ever Super Bowl Wish granted in Saskatchewan!  We were very fortunate to meet Jared at the tournament.

Jared's heart felt Wish Profile is attached below...

Wish Profile - Jared (2).pdf (290.83 kb)

Jared was the main focus of the event, being the first Super Bowl wish granted in Saskatchewan.   They played Jared’s football highlight video which ended in a chorus of clapping.   Jared was an amazing football player.   Jared really appreciated the fact that we came down to meet him.   We had many excellent conversations with him.   We had so much fun talking football with him that our guys almost missed the T off!

Here is a picture of our guys at the Chris Getzlaf Golf Tournament with Jared and some great comments below.

Curtis Witt

“It was very nice to meet Jared and his family. When I got to talk with Jared briefly about football, any name I would mention, he knew exactly who I was talking about. It’s great a football fan such as Jared got to go to the Super Bowl. He really enjoyed it”.

Jeff Caswell

“The Children’s Wish Golf Tournament was a great experience to be part of! Jared and his family are such great people to talk and share stories with.  It was really uplifting to hear their story and stories from other families about how the Children’s Wish Foundation helps and contributes to make their lives a little easier. The celebrities that were in attendance were a class act too! Everyone involved in this event deserves great praise for their efforts in making such a wonderful day and experience for the children and their families, as well as the golfers taking part in the day.”

Nathan Reed

"The 2nd Getzlaf and Friends golf tournament was a fantastic experience.  It was great to see the Children's Wish Foundation being supported by such a great group of sponsors, celebrities, and volunteers.  Meeting Jared's family and hearing about their Super Bowl Wish experience first-hand made me proud that the NS Group of Companies would support such a cause."

We saw first-hand what a difference Jared’s Wish made in his life.   Both Jared and his family were very grateful.

The Northern Strands Group of Companies employees will continue to proudly support our charity of choice, The Children's Wish Foundation Saskatchewan.
